Learning Should Help Us Understand the World and One Another.
Tamu Academy is a diaspora-rooted online learning platform that develops expert-led courses with subject-matter experts, educators, researchers, and knowledge holders.
Why Tamu Academy Exists
Tamu Academy is a diaspora-rooted online learning platform. It develops courses with subject-matter experts and knowledge holders, providing instructional design, editorial review, production, accessibility, publishing, and distribution so that expert knowledge reaches learners wherever they are.
Serious conversations about public policy, economics, governance, culture, wellbeing, and global affairs are often concentrated in universities, professional institutions, and exclusive networks. Tamu Academy works to change that — making these conversations more accessible to learners from different educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Courses may serve individuals, facilitated cohorts, universities, institutions, and community organizations. Free videos and articles provide an open-learning entry point for anyone ready to begin.
Three Pillars of Learning
Tamu Academy organises its learning around three interconnected areas that reflect what young people most need to understand in order to navigate and shape the world around them.
These pillars are reflected in Tamu Academy's current video collection, developing courses, and the expert-led learning experiences under preparation.
"Tamu Academy expands access to interdisciplinary learning that helps young people think critically, communicate across differences, and lead responsibly in their communities and the wider world."
"A world in which young people from every background can access the knowledge, relationships, and confidence needed to help shape a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future."
Guiding Principles
Human Dignity
Every learner deserves to be seen, heard, and respected regardless of background, identity, or prior education.
Intellectual Curiosity
We encourage asking difficult questions, sitting with complexity, and resisting easy answers.
Intercultural Understanding
We learn from the perspectives of people whose experiences, languages, and contexts differ from our own.
Responsible Leadership
Knowledge carries a responsibility to act thoughtfully, ethically, and with awareness of impact.
Accessible Learning
Serious ideas should not be confined to exclusive institutions. We work to lower the barriers to quality learning.
Community Application
What we learn should connect to the communities we live in and the challenges people actually face.
Ethical Use of Technology
We examine the human dimensions of technology — its power, its risks, and its relationship to dignity and justice.
Our Approach to Learning
Tamu Academy's learning model draws on a range of methods that emphasise participation, dialogue, and real-world relevance. Learning may include:
Diaspora Roots and Global Perspective
Tamu Academy is rooted in a diaspora understanding of community, knowledge, responsibility, and connection. The name Tamu — meaning sweet in Swahili — reflects a belief that learning should be nourishing, not punishing; that knowledge should serve communities, not merely credentialise individuals.
The diaspora is not a single culture. It is a global community of extraordinary cultural, linguistic, geographic, and intellectual diversity — home to thousands of languages, communities, and traditions of knowledge and governance. Tamu Academy draws inspiration from that diversity while engaging with learners and issues from across the world.
We approach global issues through lenses that are often underrepresented in mainstream educational spaces — and we believe that doing so produces richer, more honest, and more useful learning for everyone.
What Is Currently Available
Tamu Academy's first publicly available learning is a collection of free introductory videos — the Tamu Academy First Lessons — exploring wellbeing, institutions, public policy, economics, culture, and global systems. These are accompanied by a growing collection of written articles designed for reflection and further study.
Three expert-led courses are open now, with enrollment and certificates available: Mental Health, Community and Culture; Understanding African Economies and the Global System; and Sauti za Soko: Markets, Climate and Community Power. Courses in AI and digital futures, public policy and governance, and the Waiyaki wa Hinga Heritage and Leadership Collection remain in development.

Learning for Educators and Institutions
Tamu Academy works with schools, universities, youth organisations, nonprofits, public institutions and community programmes. There are three ways to bring Tamu Academy learning to the people you serve.
Run a cohort with our materials
Facilitator materials accompany each course: lesson plans, session guides, discussion prompts, activity sheets and slides. You lead the learning with your own group, at a pace that suits them, alongside our written course companions.
Connect as an Educator →Institutional cohort enrolment
We enrol your students, staff or members in an open Tamu Academy course. Your learners study through the platform at their own pace and receive certificates, and we provide progress and completion reporting for your cohort.
Discuss Institutional Access →Co-designed pilot programme
Where a course is still in development, we can plan a pilot together, adapting its focus, examples and activities to your curriculum, learners or community. The proposed Ubuntu and the Public Good programme is prepared for this kind of collaboration.
Discuss a Pilot Partnership →How a Partnership Begins
- 01Tell us about your learners and what you want them to gain, using the partnership inquiry form.
- 02We review your inquiry and reply using the contact details you provide. If it looks like a good fit, we agree the format together.
- 03We prepare the materials, enrolment or pilot and confirm what will be delivered before anything begins.
Tamu Academy is an emerging organisation, and partnership inquiries are reviewed as capacity allows. Submitting an inquiry does not guarantee a partnership, admission or funding.
Tamu Academy has opened its first three expert-led courses across mind and wellbeing and economics and development, while its public video and article collections continue to grow. Courses in AI and digital futures, public policy and governance, and the Waiyaki wa Hinga Heritage and Leadership Collection are in development, and the proposed pilot Ubuntu and the Public Good is prepared for potential collaboration with educational and community institutions.
